All together now

Today, we're presenting a workshop for a client on Talent Management. One of the aspects we're covering is that talent breeds talent, and that in order to keep great talent, you have to provide a remarkable work environment. Oh.. and show them the money..

Now compare that to the woes of Delphi Corporation. First of all, let's assume that the UAW doesn't exist. In great organizations, high pay goes hand in hand with high responsibility, high respect, and high empowerement. So, the kind executives at Delphi could have been seen as ahead of the curve when they decided to pay their employees 27 dollars an hour...

One thing that they forgot however was the fact that employees truly respect their employer when they feel 'in on things'. So, Delphi made a crucial mistake when they announced this morning that they were rolling back wages to 9.50 an hour.

Imagine the shock, the feeling of betrayal you would feel if you walked into your place of business and your boss announces that you are taking a 65% pay cut.

Was it needed? Yes. Could this situation have been avoided if Delphi had begun discussions with their employees years ago, as this situation was balooning? Yes.

I guess it goes back to communication... it's the most valuable resource your organization has... and if you don't have it... read Chapter 11...
